Document Exercise 2.1 QUIZ: Evaluate some sources!

No unread replies.          No replies.

First, make sure you watch my video on evaluating a website with the CRAAP test.Links to an external site.

Find an information resource or an entire website for your classmates to evaluate.

Please post your information resource in this discussion.

Then, comment on two  of your classmates’ resources. Evaluate the:

  • Currency
  • Relevance
  • Authority
  • Accuracy
  • Purpose

Give an explanation for your evaluation of each factor. Then, give an overall evaluation of the source.

Look at the example below!

(Student 1): I am researching whether it is safer to drink bottled water or tap water. Here is a site I found: http://www.bottledwater.org/health/bottled-water-vs-tap-water (Links to an external site.)

(Student 2): That’s an interesting topic! I took a look at the website. Here is what I think:

1. Currency. The article does not have a date. However, the website  copyright is 2017, and some articles have been updated recently. I think it is current.

2. Relevance: I think the website is very related to your topic.  The article compares tap water and bottled water, which is your  research question. I think the audience is regular consumers who are  trying to decide what water to drink, not researchers.

3. Authority: There is no author for the article. I saw that this  site is published by the International Bottled Water Association.  I can’t tell if this is an authoritative source.

4. Accuracy: The article doesn’t cite any statistics or research.  However, the page links to 2 articles, but they are both from the same  organization, the Drinking Water Research Foundation. The report (Links to an external site.)  seems to have research support, even though it is a few years old  (2011). However, the research is a little biased. It only shows the  positive aspects of bottled water only and the negative aspects of tap  water. I think it may not be accurate.

5. Purpose: I clicked on “about” (Links to an external site.)  to get more information about the International Bottled Water  Association (IBWA). I read this: “Founded in 1958, IBWA’s member  companies include U.S. and international bottlers, distributors, and  suppliers. IBWA unifies the bottled water industry and represents  uncompromising commitment to the safety and availability of bottled  water worldwide.” I believe that means that the website is published by  people who sell bottled water. I also looked at the board of directors  (Links to an external site.)and  saw that everyone seems to work for a bottled water company. Actually, I  think that the purpose is to convince us to buy more bottled water from  their companies. I think this source is not credible for your research.

My conclusion is that even though this source is current and  relevant, it is not a good source for your paper because it may not be  accurate and authoritative, and the purpose is to sell water.
